Which to Buy: Pixel 5 vs Pixel 4a 5G vs Pixel 4a?

You can expect that the new mid-ranger will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 system-on-a-chip with 8 cores, 6 of which operate at the lower 1.8 GHz while two high-performance cores clock at 2.2 GHz. Like last year, the Pixel 4a will have Google’s own Titan M security chip, but also like last year, the Pixel Neural Core will promstyle.com not be found inside. It is now a valuable resource for people who want to make the most of their mobile devices, from customizing the look and feel to adding new functionality. Inspired by @wrongway213’s original custom kernel for Pixel 4/XL, I decided to make my own project once I grab my hand on a Google device myself.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean gameover for Google’s current range of smartphones. If you’re particularly keen on owning a Pixel, waiting for the Pixel 4a might be a smart move. Google solved the memory management issue in the 3a – perhaps because it listened to critics and owners – and it may well do for the same for the 4a.

The 2022 Motorola Edge+ represents Motorola’s latest attempt to return to the flagship-phone category, and we like this model’s 6.8-inch OLED display with its ultra-fast 144 Hz refresh rate. The Edge+ is also a fast phone thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. However, in its cameras and Motorola’s software-support commitment, this phone falls short of options from both Google and Samsung.

You’ll find many more preloaded features here than on Google’s Pixel phones, including the DeX desktop mode, stackable widgets, deep lock-screen customization, and enhanced Link to Windows functionality. If you want what the S22 line offers, great—you won’t have to install as many third-party apps. But if you don’t, it can be annoying and time-consuming to disable all the Samsung extras. We like Google’s version of Android more, but Samsung’s One UI version of Android 13 largely avoids the useless clutter and goofs of more troublesome versions of the OS.

Of course, the 3.5 mm jack is also absent on the Pixel 7, the Galaxy S22, and many other flagship Android phones. The Google Pixel 7 Pro is similar to the Pixel 7 but adds a larger OLED screen with a higher resolution and refresh rate, more expansive 5G support, and a 5x telephoto camera. These improvements bump the price up to $900, so the value isn’t quite as strong as with the Pixel 7. But the Pixel 7 Pro is a more capable phone with the same excellent software and five years of update support. It’s an odd thing for Google to fail on, too, because previous Pixel devices have had some of the best battery life I’ve used on a smartphone. Whatever combination of software and hardware Google conjured together in the Pixel 1 & 2, it hasn’t managed to fully repeat it in subsequent handsets.

Asking because i have turned automatic updates off in settings and it STILL checks and STILL force updates the phone after a week or… I followed the step mentioned in their official documentation. I thought maybe my device tree or kernel that I am using has issues so I compiled the lineage for pixel 4a and got the same…

That said, it’s a little trickier picking between the Pixel 4 series and the Pixel 4a if you’re choosing between the two for a brand new phone — check out our comparison for more. The Pixel 2 series was controversial for dropping the headphone jack, which the Pixel 4a retains. Overall, the Pixel 4a is a more refined package that’s more practical to actually use versus the Pixel 2. Plus, it’s about time to switch from the Pixel 2 for long-term Android updates too. There’s really no reason to hold onto a badly aging Nexus handset any longer except for pure nostalgia. It’s a psychological detriment to name a great product after a low-end SKU.

The only hardware drawback of the Pixel 7 Pro in comparison with the standard Pixel 7 is arguably its size. The Pixel 7 Pro is about the same size as the Galaxy S22 Ultra, so it may be ungainly even if you have large hands. It’s made of the same slippery glass as the smaller Pixel model, and the metal has a smooth finish that makes it even harder to grasp, so you’ll probably want to put a case on this one.

Most good Android phones are big and heavy, but the Samsung Galaxy S22 is petite enough for those with smaller hands. The 6.1-inch OLED display looks even better than the Pixel 7’s screen, and the build quality is every bit as good as that of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. It’s built to last on the software side, too, with the same five-year update commitment as on Samsung’s other flagship phones. The S22 lacks the advanced camera array of the S22 Ultra, but it still shoots better photos than anything else that isn’t a Pixel.

The Pixel 3 also supports Google’s latest camera features and boasts a secondary wide-angle selfie camera, a feature we were disappointed the Pixel 4a didn’t copy . Google’s last-gen flagship is definitely the more feature-rich and powerful handset. Plus, the build materials are a notable step up from the Pixel 4a’s more basic feel.
