The Huffington Post, in association with the Asahi newspaper, aggregates a variety of news stories primarily on Japan, and provides this news in Japanese. This guide introduces students learning Japanese, at undergrad and graduate levels, to resources at the library and online that will help them with their language study. The writing of kawaraban (瓦版) in kanji meaning “tile print” is deceiving and most likely reflects a folk etymology related to a place name. Later, investigations by local divers who had doubts about the article proved that the Asahi photographer himself made the scratches to forge a newspaper article. Taking responsibility, the president Toichiro Hitotsuyanagi was forced to resign. The paper is considered a newspaper of record in Japan. The Mainichi is a publication of the Mainichi newspaper providing a small amount of English-language news coverage of Japan.

The launch of the paper has every appearance of being a decision by Yoshiiku and Takabatake to “newspaperize” the “illustrated news” idea that had been pioneered by the nishikie edition of Tokyo nichinichi shinbun.
