These stories and many others make up this intimate mosaic, this snapshot of who we were at the turn of the century. There are certain events, places and/or people that are mentioned in more than one sonnet. For instance both the character’s Vanessa Marquez and Dawnn Lewis drove by the Interstate 10 in the story they were telling.

Using virtual platforms, ViDCo generates entirely live performances with heightened design elements that bridges Theatre, TV, and cinema tricks into a new online hybrid form. We strategize to use the strongest elements of every discipline to inspire the artistic community to use their tools while we provide them the platforms to tell their stories. ViDCo is formed by Jared Mezzocchi, Tori Schuchmann, Deja Collins and Shoshanah Tarkow. A cast of twenty-three attempts to give voice to the meaning of their existence in José Rivera’s riveting quiltwork drama, inescapably modern with echoes of Spoon River Anthology.

Mr. Rivera made his film-acting debut playing himself in Margarita with a Straw. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Sundance Institute and has been a creative advisor for Screenwriting Labs in Utah, Jordan and India. A member of the LAByrinth Theatre Company and Ensemble Studio Theatre, he leads a weekly writing workshop in New York City, where he lives.

The College of the Arts will host events as permitted insofar as these regulations allow us to operate safely. Overall, the performance was exceptional with their live performances and effects.

Their short film, TINTO, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and they are in pre-production for their next film to be shot in Atlanta. Bard at the Gate, founded by Paula Vogel and co-curated by Paula Vogel and Nicole A. Watson, directly responds to the lack of representation of diverse voices within the American theatrical canon. This uniquely curated virtual reading series is designed to become a widely accessible platform for powerful, overlooked plays by BIPOC, women, LGBTQ, and disabled artists. An anthology-styled play by José Rivera, Sonnets for an Old Century explores the hopes, fears and epiphanies of a patchwork of souls from across the United States. Equal parts confession, celebration and elegy, this work, consisting of 28 monologues, investigates what it means to be alive and, perhaps, what dreams come after. As mentioned above, the university has mandated that masks be worn in all indoor spaces.

Also, originally “the traditional subject of the sonnet has primarily been Love.” William Shakespeare, is the first and most well known writer for classical sonnets. Since Shakespeare’s era it is known that politicians and artists do not necessarily always see the world through the same lens. Although, through Shakespeare’s incorporation of romanticism in his texts it supplied a path in which entrepreneurs and artists could share and adapt similar points of view. José Rivera, the Obie-winning author of Marisol and References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot, employs an expansive, ecstatic, poetic tone in his work that few stage writers dare to attempt. His voice shimmers with imagery, at times yielding absurd comedy and, at other times, transcendent beauty.Rivera’s new play, kyle clinkscales parents, evinces much of the Puerto Rican native’s lyrical power, and a good bit of his preciousness.

Also nominated for a BAFTA and a Writers Guild Award, The Motorcycle Diaries won top writing awards in Spain and Argentina. His screenplay based on Jack Kerouac’s On the Road premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and was distributed nationally in the winter of 2013. His film Trade was the first film to premiere at the United Nations. He has story credit on the film The 33 and shares credit on Letters to Juliet. Television credits include an untitled HBO pilot, co-written and produced by Tom Hanks; The House of Ramon Iglesia; A.K.A. Pablo ; The Eddie Matos Story; Eerie, Indiana (co-creator and producer); Goosebumps; Mayhem ; The Conquest ; and Latino Roots, an untitled 10-hour limited series for HBO.
